Calanus® Hydrolysate is a pure extract of gently processed Calanus finmarchicus, the most abundant marine zooplankter in the Norwegian Sea and “the natural starter feed” to marine fish. Calanus® Hydrolysate is an outstanding nutrient source and an excellent flavor enhancer in feed for aquatic animals and pet food.
Calanus finmarchicus differs from other marine organisms harvested today, both regarding its ecological adaptation and biochemical composition. It is therefore the source of novel products with unique properties, including Calanus® Hydrolysate which has been shown to be an ingredient with excellent properties for aquatic animals and pets. Calanus® Hydrolysate is a naturally derived, enzymatically hydrolyzed protein product, and presents as an amber homogenous liquid suitable as an ingredient in formulated feed.
Calanus® Hydrolysate is a heat stable, highly soluble product with a pleasant marine flavor. The favorable molecular weight distribution makes it a highly digestible source of protein, which along with an excellent amino acid profile results in a product for optimal growth performance.
Results from feeding studies confirm that Calanus® Hydrolysate enhances growth and survival in early life stages of aquatic animal species, which is in harmony with the ecological role of C. finmarchicus as an essential prey in their natural marine habitats.
In addition to its advantageous applications in aquaculture, Calanus® Hydrolysate is suitable as a digest in pet food. At the University in Utrecht, The Netherlands, Calanus® Hydrolysate was compared to a standard pet food palatant. In a 13-dog study, Calanus® Hydrolysate was the preferred palatant (p < 0,001). Calanus® Hydrolysate will serve as an excellent palatability enhancer in premium pet food, treats, pet supplements and pharmaceuticals, even in very low inclusions.
