Calanus® Oil improves insulin sensitivity in elderly women – promising results of a newly finished intervention study

Clinical study lead over two years by Third Faculty of Medicine, Charles University in Prague, demonstrates that oil from the marine copepod Calanus finmarchicus, at a daily intake of 2,5 gram over a period of four months significantly improves insulin sensitivity.

The objective of the study was to compare the combined effect of physical training and intake of this oil against physical training alone (with intake of sunflower as placebo) in overweight elderly women.

“To measure insulin sensitivity in the subjects we employed so called hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp method, which is considered the golden standard to analyze insulin sensitivity of whole body. Thus, our results suggest that oil from Calanus finmarchicus could improve metabolic health in overweight people”, says principal investigator of the study, Michaela Siklova, PhD, from the Third Faculty of Medicine.

Further data analysis is underway, and all results from this study will be published in international peer reviewed journals. “Both the scientists in Prague, as well as the company, are satisified that the results reflects earlier preclinical trials,” says CTO Kurt Tande in Calanus.
