Calanus® Oil

Copepods are arguably the most abundant multicellular animals in the world, and Calanus finmarchicus is among the most predominant of the copepods in the North Atlantic. We produced our first Calanus® Oil in 2007. Since then we have strived to produce the very best quality oil from this remarkable crustacean. Calanus finmarchicus has a complex 12-stage life history and we carefully harvest the copepod at two distinct stages when it has bulked up with energy-rich lipids while feeding on phytoplankton in pristine Arctic waters, making it particularly delectable.

When producing Calanus® Oil, the Calanus finmarchicus is gently processed without the use of potentially hazardous solvents. Nothing is added or taken away and Calanus® Oil has therefore the same composition and blend of essential lipid nutrients as that offered by Nature.

All Calanus products are products of nature, therefore it is no wonder that we do everything we can to protect it. One example is that we work hard to make use of the whole organism. No part of the copepod is considered as waste, thus after the oil is extracted the side streams containing minerals and proteins are further refined into other products in our expanding product range.

Several favorable effects have been found in pre-clinical trials

  • Reduces deposition of unhealthy visceral (intra-abdominal) fat
  • Improves glucose tolerance
  • Strengthens oxygen uptake and stamina
  • Reduces plaque formation and cholesterol

Calanus® Oil contains the essential omega-3 fatty acids EPA, DHA and SDA as monoesters bound to the fatty alcohols C:20 omega-9 and C22:1 omega-11, Nature’s most stable and energy dense source of lipid. The oil contains also a high level of the natural antioxidant astaxanthin, which gives the oil its ruby colour, as well as plant sterols.

The product is packed in 25 L PEHD cans, flushed with inert gas and sealed. Minimum order quantity is 22.5 kg.

Shelf life is three years from the date of manufacture. Shelf life will be enhanced through ideal storage conditions, which include temperatures below 25° C, 50% relative humidity, and an odor-free environment.
